Dive Sites of Kavieng

1.
ECHUCA PATCH & the DER YANG
A large coral ridge rising to
within 15m from the surface and sloping down to 50m in open water, close to Nusa
Island. A Taiwanese fishing vessel, the DER YANG, scuttled in 1988, rests on her
starboard side on top of the ridge covered in colorful soft corals, makes a
interesting dive.

BLOW HOLES
An eroded limestone formation
close to Nusa, Caverns and overhangs covered in soft yellow corals. Sleeping
white tip reef sharks, lobsters, Maori wrasse and turtles are often found here.

B25 MITCHELL BOMBER "Stubborn Hellion"
This plane crashed alongside the
mangroves of Manne island, near to Albatross Channel. Lies in 12m of water on a
silty bottom with machine guns still in place.
5.
ALBATROSS PASSAGE
A narrow passage between Bodissin
island and New Ireland. This passage sucks pelagics and reef fish between and
into its narrow flanks as the tide rushes in and out. Big eye Trevally, Spanish
Macherel, Tuna, Barracuda, Reef sharks, Turtles and Rays are often spotted here.
Small creatures like Pigmy Seahorses and nudibranchs are also commonly found.
The wall is over grown with big fans, black corals and colorful soft corals. A
number of different dives are possible in this passage. A truly spectacular dive
site.
6. STEFFEN STRAIT
The main shipping channel into
Kavieng, strong current, big fish diving is possible on any of several patch
reefs just outside the entrance to the straight. Helmuts reef lies in the
middle, sloping down to about 50m. Gorgonian fans, Trevally, and reef sharks are
abundant. Peter's Patch is another reef in the straight that has a mixture of
plate corals, sea fans and whips on the slopes. Golden cowries have been spotted
at this site.
7.
PLANET CHANNEL
This site has a truly remarkable
variety and concentration of flora and fauna. Part of this passage is also
called Eagle Ray pass with strong current running through this narrow channel
eagle rays are almost guarantied.
8.
LEMUS ISLAND
This dive is made on the southern
point of Lemus Island. Fantastic hard coral gardens in the shallows and
Gorgonian fan covered ridges at 20-30m where pelagic's congregate when a current
is present. A very pleasant drift dive.
9.
KAPLAMAN REEF
A series of reef ridges located of
the east coast of New Ireland. On the up current side of these ridges schooling
big eye Trevally , Spanish Mackerel, patrolling Dog tooth tuna and Barracuda
often allow divers and photographers to get really close. Eagle rays and grey
reef sharks are also spotted at this site. A great alternative dive to the walls
and passages of the Bismark sea.
10.
SILVER TIP REEF
Located off the Tsoi Islands, a
1hr 30 m boat ride from Kavieng. Two silver tip female sharks patrol this coral
outcrop. Passing very close to divers these impressive sharks offer exciting
photo opportunities. As this dive site is in open sea it can only be made when
the sea is calm..
